West Germany jewelry was created from 1949 to 1990 which attributed heavily to the costume jewelry industry following the post-war life in Europe. West Germany pieces derive from the Kaufbeuren-Neugablonz region in Germany which is known for producing intricate, European-style pieces such as beaded necklaces, ornate clip-on earrings and glass jewelry.
Following WWII, new industrial zones were established in West Germany, such as Kaufbeuren-Neugablonz, to support the post-war economy and re-establish the country’s jewelry industry.
Manufacturers used materials such as glass, plastic and base metals to create decorative jewelry pieces that supported local artists and generated foreign trade. Pieces are often marked “West Germany” and can feature Victorian and/or Edwardian design influences.
The jewelry industry – both luxury and costume – played a critical role in providing employment and generating much-needed funds for West Germany’s post-war economic recovery through export and global trade.
